Jean-Nicolas Diatkine started studying music at the age of six with Wilfredo Voguet. After a Baccalauréat in science (the equivalent of an A level) and a participation to the Concours Général in philosophy (a competitive examination open to the best secondary school children), he continued his piano studies with Carlindo Valeriani, Joseph Villa from the Juillard School in New York and with the duet Broadway-Markham in the United States and in Canada.
Two encounters have been determinant for him: Ruth Neye, in 1989, teacher at the Yehudi Menuhin School in the United Kingdom, trained by Claudio Arrau, and in 1994, Narcis Bonet, composer, trained by Nadia Boulanger and Igor Markevitch.
